Destin, Florida offers great fishing in the month of August.
The main focus during this month is bottom fishing for vermillion snapper, but there are many other fish to catch as well.
Fishing in Destin during the month of August can be a very exciting adventure. Although red snapper typically closes in July, there is still very good fishing. This time of year can be very hot, and not much wind which is very good for the sea conditions. Bottom fishing in August mostly consists of targeting vermillion snapper. You can keep many of them and they are great eating, but they are not a very hard fighting fish. When fishing for these fish we primarily use two hook rigs with cut bait. Typically triggerfish season also opens back up in August. Triggerfish can be a very fun fight, and they are great to eat. Along with vermillion snapper and triggerfish we tend to see a few scamp grouper, lane snapper, mangrove snapper, and white snapper while two hook fishing. Occasionally the vermillion snapper can become picky depending on the moon phase, and these other species become the main target. The fishing techniques may vary slightly to depending on which of these fish we target. Amberjack season also opens during the month of August. This can be a very enjoyable fish to target as well. They offer a fun fight, and lots of meat to harvest. We typically see amberjack around wrecks and target them with live bait. Amberjack can be very aggressive fish, and if you are lucky enough to fill the live well with hardtails while bait fishing, you should be able to fill the fish box with amberjack!
Trolling during the month of August will also make for a fun and efficient trip! When trolling in the Gulf of Mexico, you will typically catch bigger fish compared to bottom fishing but the fish may not be as plentiful. Trolling at sunrise just outside of the Destin pass usually produces Spanish mackerel, King mackerel, and bonita very consistently. You can either high speed troll lures, or troll cigar minnows and herring at low speeds. Trolling for amberjack is also very productive this time of year. Trolling high speed lures across the top of wrecks will attract schools of amberjack, and get them aggressive. This is a very fun way to catch them, along with slow speed trolling live baits. Trolling larger live baits around wrecks, and natural bottoms can produce very good amberjack, but may take some time in shallower water. Trolling around natural bottom this time of year with baits such as cigar minnows and herring can also produce a lot of king and Spanish mackerel.
