The fishing in Destin, Florida in June is very good! The trolling bite in June can be very good as well. First thing in the morning trolling just outside of the Destin pass can be very rewarding. You can either troll artificials, or live baits and typically have a very productive morning. Your typical trolling catch would look like a mix of Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, and bonito. Trolling around bottom structures can produce a good number of Spanish mackerel and king mackerel.
Another fish that can be caught trolling this time of year is mahi-mahi, or dolphin. With the water reaching a warmer temperature this month, the mahi-mahi tend to be closer to shore than the spring or winter. Mahi-mahi can also be caught trolling around bottom structure. When you find grass floating, or a foreign object, such as a log, buoy, or bucket, floating on the surface you will almost always find some fish around it. Once you locate the mahi then you can chum for them, present live bait, or toss jigs tipped with squid for high success rates. There is usually an abundance of live bait to catch in June, and they can be used for trolling and or bottom fishing.
In June, gag grouper opens, and historically at some point during the month red snapper season will open. The best bottom fishing is when we target red snapper. Red snapper fishing is best done with live bait on a Carolina rig. They can also be caught chumming over artificial reefs, or natural bottom. While snapper fishing it is not uncommon to catch a gag grouper when sending down large live bait. Scamp grouper often get caught while going out for snapper fishing. You may catch the occasional vermillion snapper and mangrove snapper while snapper fishing as well.
Also, a remarkable fishery during June is the shark fishing. The sharks are very active during this time of year. Most of the time you can catch as many sharks as you can reel in outside the pass. The sharks are also fired up around the wrecks and artificial reefs. This time of year is during the spinner shark migration, and it can be very exciting getting to witness them jump on the end of the line! Learn more about shark fishing in Destin, Florida here.
