Fishing in Destin, Florida in September is very good all around.
The bottom fishing is fired up most days, and the trolling bite is very consistent.
Most mornings it’s best to start out the trip catching a few live baits. Its also good to take advantage of this time and do a little trolling. Most bait is caught just outside of the Destin pass. Since there is typically lots of bait in this area, it is also a good area to troll. Slow trolling live bait around the depth change can produce king, Spanish mackerel, and bonita pretty consistently. Also showing up this time of year as a few sailfish here and there, but not something to expect often. Trolling live bait and lures over structure also produces a lot of fish. Around structure with lots bait usually holds bigger fish as well. Another species to target trolling this month is amberjack. Amberjack are often caught trolling larger live baits around structure, especially shipwrecks. If you can load the live well with nice hard tails the amberjack will eat them up!
The bottom fishing in September is also very productive. The main target when bottom fishing is vermillion snapper. Vermillion snapper are one of the best eating fish in the Gulf of Mexico, although they are not the hardest fighting fish, they are still a good little fight. Most of the fishing for vermilions is done over a natural bottom, on two hook rigs. The bait used for these fish is usually squid, bonito chunks, or salted mackerel. White snapper are usually caught while fishing for vermillion snapper as well. Triggerfish are also typically in season during the month of September. They are caught the same way as vermilions, and are a wonderful addition to the dinner table. Dropping down live baits on a Carolina rig could produce amberjack, and grouper, but typically are not the main targets, because it is more productive targeting vermilions for the majority of the time spent fishing.
